About Joseph
Hi, I’m Joe, a graduate of Utrecht University and the University of Nottingham (MA in International Relations in Historical Perspective and BA in History and Ancient History, respectively). I have a genuine passion for History and, unsurprisingly, I also enjoy writing essays – or perhaps it is simply a love for constructing arguments.
That said, I appreciate that History is not everyone’s cup of tea. In the same way I struggled with Mathematics, many students find History dry or unengaging. However, I do not believe that the fault lies with the subject itself.
History shapes every aspect of our lives, and patterns from the past continue to echo into the present. The issue is often how it is taught. Significant, world-shaping events are reduced to generic lists of dates and names, stripped of the narrative and meaning that makes them compelling. My aim is to restore that passion for the subject, which I believe is essential for academic success.

My approach varies depending on level. At GCSE level, the priority is building understanding and interest – filling knowledge gaps and developing clear essay technique in a way that makes the subject engaging and accessible.
At A-level and undergraduate or Master’s level, tuition becomes more specialised. This may include essay refinement, argument structure, source analysis, or, where relevant, gobbet and memorandum writing. At this stage, the focus shifts from engagement to precision and fine-tuning.
