About Benjamin
I have tutored for around four years, for several prestigious companies, and primarily to international students in Hong Kong and Japan, to whom I have taught preparation for the SAT, SSAT, ISEE, ACT, and IGCSE and A-Level English exams. I have also tutored online, teaching English mostly to undergraduate students: I cover content help, essay writing skills, and proofreading.

I teach English Literature in the manner I was taught at the University of Cambridge, where the discipline of practical criticism was first codified: accordingly, I emphasise the importance of analysis at the closest level possible, focusing on, amongst a myriad other elements, the roots and contexts of particular words and images; ambiguity; traditions of form, etc. I would ordinarily test a student's knowledge of a text and preparedness for an exam with reference to this discipline. For essay writing, I would first ensure a thorough knowledge of the text(s) under study and then discuss the proposed structure and style in depth, planning rigorously and bearing in mind the further steps in the essay-writing process. I believe a student should be challenged as much as possible, from the wider theoretical ideas under consideration in the study of a text to the smallest details of grammar, in order to ensure his or her thoughts and writing are as clear and developed as possible.
