Ian - Full time Maths Tutor based in Lockbottom, Orpington - Maths - GCSE - A-Level - Degree

I also tutor for various vocational qualifications such as the QTS numeracy skills test for teachers

I am a full-time tutor available day-time and after school but not weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Age 12 upwards.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE, A-Level and Degree

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for Maths with others. There is often quite a fine line between hating and loving Maths, I try to help my students to cross that line. Generally, my approach is to help students to understand how to solve problems themselves rather than just showing them the solution.

I tailor my approach to the individual student. Usually, I start by asking the student to identify areas they have found difficult at school. Mastering something that couldn't previously be done usually boosts confidence. I keep an eye on the results of school tests and homework to enable me to follow up on any problem areas or misunderstandings. As the exams approach, I use past papers to check understanding, identify areas of weakness and resolve issues.

I prepare some topics for each lesson based on known problem areas but I am always happy to be diverted to look at a current difficulty from school or homework.
It is very common to need to revise subject areas from earlier years where some basic principles have not been understood properly. I look out for these fundamental issues and resolve them in a way that schools just don't have time to do.

I usually set a small piece of homework each week to reinforce a topic that we have been covering or a past paper to practice as the exams approach.

As an engineer I can often explain how Maths topics are used in practice and I try to make what often appear to be abstract topics come to life. Most of all, I try to boost confidence and make the lessons enjoyable.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am an experienced full-time Maths tutor.
I have extensive experience of working with young people as a trained youth leader, mentor for engineering students and as a personal tutor.
I can provide references from previous or current students

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I have a DBS Certificate which is renewed every 5 Years and available for review.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Here are some testimonials from my recent students:

I came to Ian on the back of poor mock exam results in A2 level and he helped me to really understand the topics that I had previously struggled with. I managed to get an A overall and I doubt that I would have been able to do that with out him - CL, August 2014

I highly recommend Ian Moseling as a private tutor. Ian has a wonderful rapport with students of all ages, with a natural ability to connect and a talent at teaching simple. concepts as well as more advanced topics. Ian has been fundemental in topping up our son's mathematical abilities at degree level, the benefits of which have been invaluable. - CR, January 2014

I passed my resit with 85%. I couldn't have done it without your help over the summer. - CR, September 2013

Hi Ian, I got an A* (97%) and I have been moved to the top set for A Level. Is it OK if I continue to come next year. - CD, August 2013
Thanks for all your help over the past year. Without you, I would certainly have failed. - EB, June 2013

If you would like to talk to one of my past or present students, please let me know and I will put you in contact with them.
