Ian Peter - Willesden Green - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a conductor, keyboard player (harpsichord/fortepiano/pianoforte), and vocal and chamber music coach based in Central London, currently concluding my doctoral studies in historical performance at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach conducting, keyboard (harpsichord/fortepiano/pianoforte), vocal and chamber music coaching, as well as music theory and musicianship skills.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I read for a B.A. (Hons.) in Music, as well as an MMus in Orchestral and Opera conducting (at the University of Malta and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama respectively). I am currently concluding my doctoral studies in historical performance on the MPhil course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. I am also a holder of the following musical diplomas: DipABRSM, ALCM, BMusLSM, and a Diploma in conducting from the 'Peter the Great Music Academy' (St. Petersburg, Russia).

- How much do you charge?

My fees are calculated on a sliding scale which is in turn dependent on peak & off-peak times & location in relation to travel – but as my profile here states, my rates start from £45 an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I usually travel to one's home to teach – otherwise, availability dependent, I teach from home near Gladstone Park in NW2 (usually during the day); for those who need a more central location, I also teach at Schott's music shop on Great Marlborough Street (near Oxford Circus), for which there is a room charge on top of my fee.

- When are you available?

Currently, I am available between 12pm and 4pm on Mondays, all day on Tuesdays, 9am-12pm & 5pm-8pm on Wednesdays, 11am to 3pm on Thursdays, and 11am to 8pm on Fridays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and all levels (from graded music exams to GCSEs and A-levels, and up to conservatoire/professional level).

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I mainly prepare students for graded exams (ABRSM, Trinity, etc.), Music Diplomas, GCSEs, and A-levels.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

No matter how easy or difficult something is – take it seriously, and make sure you are passionate about it. As a teacher, I'm here not only to help you get things right, but also to inspire you and make sure you have fun along the way. Now let's make some music!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a keyboard player, I have performed throughout the United Kingdom and mainland Europe, and was also a prize-winner for some piano competitions on the continent. I specialise in historical performance, regularly taking on the double role of conductor and soloist with various seventeenth and eighteenth-century keyboard (harpsichord/fortepiano) concertos; I also conduct most early instrumental music and operas from the keyboard.

I am the founder of my own touring period instrument ensemble ('Les Bougies Baroques'), which I founded to perpetuate the work of the great historical performance pioneers. In the past, I have worked with a number of acclaimed groups and orchestras that include the 'St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra', 'Malta Philharmonic Orchestra', 'Orion Symphony Orchestra', 'RWCMD Chamber Orchestra', 'REPCo Orchestra', and the 'Wales International Academy of Voice (Saturday Academy)'. Operas in which I have featured as main conductor and assistant conductor include Mozart's 'Der Schauspieldirektor' (Teatru Manoel – Notte Bianca Festival, September 2012), Salieri's 'Prima la musica e poi le parole' (Teatru Manoel – Notte Bianca Festival, September 2012), Johann Strauss's 'Die Fledermaus' (RWCMD, March 2011), Mozart's 'Le Nozze di Figaro' (RWCMD, March 2012), Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly' (Mid-Wales Opera, September 2011), the Mascagni-Leoncavallo 'Cavalleria Rusticana' and 'Pagliacci' double-bill (Teatru Manoel, March 2013), and Gluck's 'Il Parnaso Confuso' (Wilton's Music Hall, August 2015).

In the past, I have been responsible for musically preparing internationally-acclaimed countertenor Max Cencic in Vienna in anticipation of the release of his new album 'Venezia' with the record-label Virgin (this album was released in January 2013); I have also performed for HRH Prince Edward of Windsor, Earl of Wessex, and other distinguished guests at Palazzo Parisio in Malta for a World Fellows dinner (Duke of Edinburgh event). Notable appearances have included a performance with the 'Academy of Ancient Music' in a 2013 'side-by-side' concert, closing the 'Valletta International Baroque Festival' with 'Les Bougies Baroques' in 2014, and debuting in Berlin later in 2014 (also with 'Les Bougies Baroques'). Forthcoming engagements as conductor and keyboard player include various symphonic and operatic concerts in London and mainland Europe with Les Bougies Baroques.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I am a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where I read for an MMus in orchestral and opera conducting under the tutelage of conductor-in-residence David Jones. I previously studied piano and theory of music with Maria Dolores Amodio and Stephanie Quintano Lauri respectively, before furthering my musical studies at the University of Malta – reading for a B.A. (Hons.) degree in Music (major in piano performance and conducting), mainly studying with Michael Laus.

I have also been tutored in conducting opera by Australian opera conductor Richard Divall, as well as in conducting symphonic repertoire by Jonathan Butcher, Neil Thomson, and Toby Purser. I am currently in the process of condoning my doctoral studies in historical performance on the MPhil course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

'Les Bougies Baroques' (touring period instrument ensemble for which I am the fouder and Artistic & Executive Director).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My students range in age from 5 to 70 – their levels vary, as do their goals – but no matter what their goals and levels may be, they are united by a love for music and take their commitment to music very seriously while making sure they enjoy their musical journey with me.

Ian teaches piano with a strong focus on technique and performance skills so that the student attains a solid foundation on which to build and improve. He is a good judge of what is right for the individual student in terms of both repertoire and goals.

Ian Peter has a methodical approach to teaching that focuses on improving technical skills while also allowing me to develop my own style & interpretation. Our lessons are stimulating & offer an appropriate level of challenge individualised to suit my particular goals. His support & guidance have given me the confidence to tackle music that I had not previously thought possible. As a result, I've not only improved my technique, but also developed my appreciation & passion for music even further.

Having gone from a rudimentary musical knowledge to a Grade 5 level in theory – as well as a Grade 2 level in piano – in the space of 5 months, I would say that Mr. Bugeja is an exceptional teacher. He has successfully allowed me unlock my potential and I hope to keep progressing with him for many more lessons to come!
