Imogen - Fulford - Recorder

Methodology

I am a friendly teacher working in the York area, where I am currently taking on new students. I prioritise making sure my students enjoy their lessons and the instrument they are learning and my aim is to suit lessons to each individual.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach violin, viola and recorder, as well as academic music and music theory. I teach violin, recorder and viola up to advanced level, and tutor academic music up to A level, and the start of undergraduate level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am well qualified with degrees in music performance and music education. My qualifications include the following:

Postgraduate Diploma in Music Education: Instrumental and Vocal Teaching (distinction), University of York, 2016
Master of Arts in Music (performance) (merit), University of York, 2014
Bachelor of Arts in Music (first class), University of York, 2012

ABRSM grade 8 Viola, Recorder and Theory

- How much do you charge?

I charge between £25 pounds per hour for lessons, and I also offer some discounts to pupils on low incomes and for block booking.

- Where do you teach?

Where I teach depends on what suits each pupil best. I currently teach at my home in York, and at pupils' homes. I am willing to travel within York and the surrounding villages.

- When are you available?

I have a wide range of availability, both during the week and weekends. I teach during the day, and in the evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach pupils of all ages and abilities (Beginner to ABRSM grade 8 and beyond).

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams, where appropriate.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

For online tutoring I organise email correspondence with my students. If possible I set up a 'google drive' webpage and documents to work from, and I set assignments and 'meeting' times where we are both online.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you feel that I could meet you needs to get in contact for a consultation lesson or to chat about what I offer.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am an experienced and well-qualified teacher, working in the York and Leeds areas. As well as teaching privately, I currently teach violin and recorder in primary and secondary schools. I teach all ages, from young children to adults and elderly. My aim is to suit the lessons to each individual, and to ensure that each pupil gets the most out of and enjoys their experience. I always prioritise making sure that my students enjoy their lessons and the instrument they are learning. As well as teaching individuals of all ages, I am also happy to teach in small groups, for instance, siblings or friends learning together.

I believe strongly that music is something that can be enjoyed by everyone. My teaching is focused on learning but also enjoyment and I feel that this principle is important for success. I incorporate Kodaly and Suzuki pedagogies into my teaching, for example, by including singing games and rhythms with younger pupils, and music theory and memory with older students, to develop well-rounded musicians.

I work in a flexible way, offering tuition that is adapted and suited to each student, treating everyone as an individual and responding to their needs.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and the Musicians Union.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My pupils are all offered the opportunities to perform in twice yearly pupil concerts, which are held in York.

Testimonials from pupils include:

Madeline
A few months ago and about 45 years after my first and only attempt to teach myself to play the recorder, I decided it was time I learned something musical while I still just about could - and time I had a teacher too. I have never had any kind of music education, so it was with great trepidation that I took my old recorder out of its box and embarked on lessons with Imogen. And I am so glad I did. Progress is slow at my age, but progress there is and I am really enjoying learning something new and actually playing music! Although she is obviously a talented musician, Imogen is patient and encouraging and doesn't make me feel an idiot or under pressure. I wish I'd done this years ago and I'm so glad I've conquered my fears to do it now.
