In my career working at a high level required a lot of discipline and a high skill level but in a creative area I think that it should also include a lot of fun and that is how I design my teaching.
In the past I have lectured to groups but I find teaching "one to one" much more rewarding as you can really get to know what the individual needs. My lessons are usually hourly but I am happy to customise to suit your commitments. Please get in touch by email or phone to find out how I can help you realise your individual potential.
Hi, I have worked in the film and photography business for about 40 years mostly for BBC TV in London. I know, you don't have to tell me that sounds a very long time! However I can assure you every bit of it was fantastic and so enjoyable. You may want to learn for fun, maybe want to improve your photography skills or you might just want to kickstart your career in photography, film or TV? What ever your needs I am sure I will be able to help. My experience includes shooting stills and video footage for broadcast on BBC 1 & 2 using DSLR / video cameras. I am also BBC trained in lighting for TV and stills (3 Point lighting) and as an ex film editor familiar with shooting for an edit.

Allan very patiently showed us the basics of how a camera worked and then on a photo safari in London where we learned how to take artistic images using the skills he had taught us. It wasn’t all about camera technique, a lot of the time we were considering composition. We have both captured some really interesting shots which - after some digital editing - we are delighted with. And more importantly, we now have a foundation on which we can build through practice and experimentation. Thanks so much for getting us started Allan! Kind regards, Oscar and Amy
I contacted Allan as I needed some advice on the practicalities of self-shooting. I needed help specifically with what equipment was best suited to my needs, camera work and audio recording.
Allan initially came up with a very detailed schedule of what our lessons would look like. The first few were theory and the last few were a practical session in which we met up and made a short film together. It was exactly what i was looking for and the process has helped me immensely.
Allan is very patient and was great at making sure I understood what he meant before he moved on to the next topic. He was very flexible and would always reply to any questions I might send him over email. He is extremely knowledgeable and has had a very interesting career, which he draws on to provide lessons through example.
I would really recommend Allan to anyone looking to improve their skills in this industry, and know i will be going back to him if I ever need another lesson!
I had a six-hour stint of being taught editing on Final Cut Pro. As a teacher, Allan was very knowledgeable and excellent at imparting what he knew. He tailored his teaching to my particular needs skilfully. I would not hesitate to recommend his services to anyone wanting to master film/video editing techniques to a high-end amateur level or a professional standard.
Allan is a very kind, calm, compassionate teacher. He provides in depth explanations, many resources, gives you space to elaborate your own ideas and is very considerate. Would recommend to anyone!
I've used Allan as tech and camera supremo in my business and he's been invaluable. He combines a mix of creativity and tech nous which not only delivers a great product but also an enjoyable experience. He's a really kind guy who makes it fun and enjoyable to learn from. I totally recommend him.
I've worked with Allan as a camera operator and Allan as a director. He has a very calm manner that makes the set and production run very smoothly.
He has a lot of experience as producer/director, from his time at the BBC for years and freelance.
I have worked with Allan on several assignments filming video casts with University academics. Allan is calm, clear and extremely professional. He puts people at ease and achieved excellent results.
