About May
Hi, I’m a Chinese native speaker with native-level Japanese. My journey with Japanese began 20 years ago, and over a decade of living and working in Japanese culture has made it a part of who I am. I also speak English, so I can explain tricky concepts from a learner’s perspective—making them easier to understand and remember. For 12 years, I’ve taught in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, and now the UK at the University of Liverpool. Most of my work has been teaching Japanese, but I’ve also taught Chinese and English to Japanese and international students, adapting my methods to each learner’s needs. I fell in love with Japanese at university—it opened a new world of people, ideas, and culture. My goal is to open that same door for you, so you can enjoy the language, embrace the culture, and find your own connection to it.

I blend Japanese culture, practical drills, and differentiated instruction to create lively, effective lessons. Instead of starting with grammar, I use real-life examples, so students can discover rules themselves, boosting curiosity and initiative. Lessons are available in 60-, 90-, or 120-minute formats, tailored to each student’s goals and level. With 12 years’ teaching experience across Hong Kong, Hokkaido (Japan), Macau, Shanghai, Shenzhen and in the UK at the University of Liverpool over the past year, I have taught students from primary Grade 1 to university seniors. I switch effectively between Chinese, English, and Japanese to suit different learning contexts and student needs. I hold JLPT N1, Japanese Major Test Band 8, a Chinese Teacher Qualification Certificate, and IBDP teaching certification. My culturally rich, interactive lessons are suitable for learners of all ages—whether for exams, travel, work, or pure enjoyment.

Perfect! Really enjoyed my lesson with May, very friendly and informative, accommodated the lesson on my needs and incorporated Japanese culture into the lesson. May had me speaking Japanese from the start, helping me with pronunciations. Had answers to all my questions and cleared up things that I found confusing. May also gave homework on things to practice for next lesson, looking forward to future lessons.
- Olly is very punctual and was ready for the lesson right on time. He is polite and respectful throughout, and it’s clear he already has a strong self-study background — he knows quite a lot, even things many intermediate learners may not be familiar with, despite this being his first lesson with a teacher. He picks up pronunciation, grammar, and cultural points very quickly and shows a natural aptitude for learning Japanese. I’m looking forward to seeing his progress and continuing our lessons together.May's response :
Perfect! May is such a good tutor and really sweet! She caters the lessons to my needs as I only want to have a basic understanding of Japanese whilst I travel and she creates lesson plans that is accommodating to that. I can also message her anytime for help on homework and she will always reply and help me! Thankyou May! You are a great tutor :)
- Gabrielle is very punctual and enthusiastic.May's response :
She shared a lot of her understanding of Japanese and asked very good questions.
When I pointed out issues or mistakes, she accepted the feedback very positively.
Perfect! I had a great session with May. She used a lot if Japanese throughout my session which really helps immersive learning. She tailored the session to be and gave me goals to achieve before our next session :)
- I think Sophie has two outstanding strengths. First, she is very punctual. Second, throughout the entire lesson, she was very cooperative and asked excellent questions. The whole hour felt truly productive with no wasted time. As for areas of improvement, I haven’t found any so far. Everything was excellent!May's response :

Very nice and patient teacher. May know exactly which path is needed for her students.
May provides Japanese lessons for my two school-aged children. She fully customizes the lessons to their needs, and thinks carefully about how to encourage their learning.
My kids always leave the lesson feeling more excited about using Japanese. She is a real professional, as well as being a kind person!I wholeheartedly recommend May as an exceptional educator. As an active university lecturer, she brings rigorous academic standards to her teaching, but what truly sets her apart is her dedication to her students' real-world progress.
May never puts a course on autopilot. Even for subjects she has taught year after year, she meticulously reviews and upgrades every single session, drawing directly on previous student feedback and classroom outcomes to ensure the material remains fresh and effective. She takes the time to understand her students' backgrounds and learning goals, thoughtfully tailoring materials to meet their specific needs.
Rather than relying on passive lectures, May excels at designing purposeful, interactive activities. These hands-on sessions do more than keep a class engaged—they anchor complex concepts in memory and give students an immediate, practical way to test their understanding and see measurable results.
Learning with May means knowing that every lesson has been carefully built around your success. I recommend her without reservation.May is a fantastic Japanese tutor, she is very friendly and each lesson is enjoyable and productive. Every lesson is planned based on my own progress and May always encourages me to converse with her in Japanese so I can improve my speaking and reading abilities along with my pronunciations. May also includes a lot of Japanese culture into the lessons which is very interesting to learn about. I would definitely recommend May to anyone who wants to learn and improve their Japanese.
