Hi! I am a very enthusiastic piano student and teacher. I have been teaching for 8 years and have 100% success rate with putting students through more than 100 exams. I have vast experience with both face to face tuition and online. I teach Piano and music theory. . I graduated in Music from the University of York in 2012, I have a performance diploma and I have trained to teach Suzuki Piano to Level 2. I charge £38 an hour and offer a free consultation meet/first lesson. I think it is important to understand the needs and ambitions of my students and for them to feel comfortable before they start paying for lessons. I teach from my home in Leyton and offer online tuition too so you can call in from anywhere! - When are you available? Friday, between 9 and 3.30pm, I'm now full with young students after school. I can teach either face-to-face either in my studio in Leyton, East London, with 2 upright pianos, or online. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I teach all ages. My current students range from beginner to Grade 8 +. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? I can prepare students for ABRSM Practical and Theory exams. - Do you have a personal message for students? I try to make lessons fun and informal. I still love playing and learning myself and my aim is to make piano/music as fun as it should be!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Joel.
Perfect! I came to Joel as an adult beginner who had started to play around with piano over the pandemic but never got very far. Despite me being incredibly self conscious, Joel put me at ease straight away and patiently ironed out all the bad habits I'd got myself into, without once saying "You should have started with a teacher"! My journey is led by what I want to do, in my case that's been working my way up through the grade pieces (with, as an adult, the exams themselves very much treated as optional) but I feel if I wanted to do it differently, I'd just have to ask. Joel is also sympathetic and non-judgemental when life gets in the way and I have not had much chance to practice or when, occasionally, I have had to reschedule a lesson. I highly recommend Joel.
Perfect! I am a new adult learner and have been taking lessons with Joel for about eight months now. Joel is really flexible in his approach and is very easygoing and approachable. Sometimes we work on traditional ABRSM pieces, or sometimes we work on playing chords to accompany pop songs - Joel is very patient and happy to accomodate my preferences. It has been a really enjoyable experience and I have made great progress. Highly recommend, especially if you are a self conscious adult learner:)
Perfect! Interesting exercises and drills
Perfect! This was my first piano lesson in 40 years and I was a little apprehensivebut it was a very helpful first lesson. Some really good tips to help improve my rhythm. Joel is very good and being both encouraging but also giving useful feedback about where I need to improve. He had a good range of musical experience and a skilled teacher. I look forward to more lessons.
Perfect! As an adult who’s an absolute beginner with piano, Joel’s chilled, calm and supportive approach is really helpful!

I cannot recommend Joel highly enough.
I have been learning to play the piano with him for six months as an adult learner (starting age 36) who had never played before.
Joel's teaching style is the perfect balance of structure and creative flair. He has a very gentle nature, he is kind and patient and I can tell that he listens carefully to my experience with the practice and adapts to my needs each week.
Joel's expertise and passion for music is clear and contagious. I feel inspired to practice every day. My piano lesson is the highlight of my week.
If you are reading this and considering lessons I would say don't hesitate to go with Joel, you won't be disappointed.Having learnt piano as a child - reluctantly - and come back to it as an adult, I found Joel to be a patient, warm and kind teacher. If he ever got frustrated (which he must have!) he never showed it and I learnt to love playing the piano. He is an excellent piano tutor and I would wholeheartedly recommend him.
Joel taught piano to my daughter, Edie, for almost seven years. Throughout that time, he has been a wonderful teacher. He is always enthusiastic and encouraging of Edie’s strengths and patient and understanding when she struggles with a piece. He listens intently to her music and provides clear guidance of where and how to improve.
Joel’s constructive, consistent and positive approach to teaching has really informed Edie’s enjoyment of the piano and of music generally, and we are very grateful to have had him as a teacher.
Joel is an exceptional tutor. Knowledgable, kind, patient and funny.
I have gone from little to no experience on the Piano to achieving distinctions in my Grade exams, this is in no small part to Joel’s ability to teach in accordance to how I learn best and shape lessons to suit me. He is also open to any deviations from the curriculum, whether to learn a particular tune or just have a chat about music.
It’s an absolute pleasure to meet with and be taught by Joel every week and I cannot recommend him highly enough.
