About Jonathan
- What kind of experience do you have?
A graduate of Juilliard, Yale and the Royal Academy of Music, I work as a private tutor and freelance performer. My experience as an educator ranges from teaching beginner band in inner-city Manhattan, to tutoring undergraduate students at Yale University. I have also worked in the UK school system tutoring students for ABRSM and A-level examinations. As such I have taught an incredibly diverse set of students with vastly different backgrounds, personalities and needs. I believe this makes me a very adaptable teacher, able to quickly identify and cater to the needs to each student, whilst always maintaining and communicating my love for the music.
As a performer I've been lucky enough to work with Richard Egarr, Masaaki Suzuki, Sir Colin Davis and Rachel Podger, and to benefit from the teaching of Michael Cox (principal, BBC Symphony Orchestra) and Ransom Wilson.
Teaching has always played a crucial part in my career and development as a flautist. Not only does it make me a better and more thoughtful musician, but I consider it a responsibility and a privilege to share my enthusiasm for the music to which I’ve committed myself with the next generation. I work hard to ensure that each student has the kind of structure and repertoire that engages them the most and which will give them the best possible results in performance and examination.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Full CRB
- Where and with whom did you train?
Michael Cox, Karen Jones, Ransom Wilson, Sandra Miller (baroque)
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I was a student of Jonty's for two years and can say without hesitation that he is the best flute teacher I've had in my 13 total years of study. Beyond being an extremely talented player, he is excellent at identifying specific things to work on from hand positioning to embouchure. He is particularly good at communicating accessible ways to work on and improve these things, once identified. I found that under his tutelage my playing advanced at a rate much faster than it did under any of my other teachers. He is also a very kind person and has a great sense of humor. I would highly recommend Jonty to any level of player!!
Jonty is truly a gifted flutist and flute instructor. Not only did our daughter thrive as a musician under his tutelage, his patience and careful guidance on not being self-critical spilled over into other parts of her life. We cannot imagine a better music instruction experience.
