Sirius - South Kensington, London - Flute, Piano, Recorder & Music Theory - Postgraduate at the Royal College of Music

Methodology

I am a Hong Kong-born flautist and pianist studying the Artist Diploma in Performance, the highest level of taught-postgraduate, at the Royal College of Music in London.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute, piano, recorder and music theory. I strike a good balance between fundamental technique and repertoire playing, so that my students can learn to play well technically and musically. Also, I train students with good musical theory and aural skills so that they can receive comprehensive music education. For the amateur, I focus on the ability to learn different pieces and be flexible in their choice of music.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have completed my Master of Music in Performance with Distinction and Bachelor of Music with First-class Honours, both at the Royal College of Music. I have received the highest classification ‘Exceptional Distinction’ in my master's graduation recital and am the recipient of the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal in recognition of my outstanding contribution to the life of the RCM. I have attained DipABRSM in the flute, LRSM (Performance) in the piano, LTCL (Recital) in the recorder and ABRSM Grade 8 Theory.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £50 per hour for flute, piano, recorder and music theory. Tuition fee for 45 or 30 minutes (for beginners) needs further negotiation. Travel cost is included.

- Where do you teach?

I usually teach in South Kensington, but I am also happy to travel to students' home. I can travel to London Docklands and Central London.

- When are you available?

I am free to teach on weekdays nights and weekends day time.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I have been teaching students aged from 4 to 52; and from complete beginner to advanced level. Therefore, I am happy to teach students at all ages and levels.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am always passionate and serious about teaching because I love the process of sharing my knowledge to others. I believe my international background adds diversity to the lesson and widens the students' horizon. I hope we can enjoy music together and communicate through music!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching students aged from 4 to 52; and from complete beginner to advanced level. I have also taught in group classes and worked with schools for instrumental classes. My students have taken ABRSM Graded exams and received excellent results. Also, I have offered help to students for their schools' concerts, public performance and other performances.

I have participated in many competitions and received awards and scholarships including the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Award and Tillett Trust's Young Artist. I am an experienced orchestral player and soloist who has worked with Sir Roger Norrington, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Nicholas Collon, and played in masterclasses with Emmanuel Pahud, Mathieu Dufour and Philippe Bernold.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No, but I am happy to get one if required.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I am currently studying flute at the Royal College of Music under Professor Katie Bedford (Co-Principal Flute at English National Opera) and Sue Thomas (Sub-Principal Flute at London Philharmonic Orchestra). I had piano lessons with Professor Kathron Sturrock.
