About Kenneth
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over 35 years' experience as a professional teacher in New Zealand and Scotland.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I have the Scottish equivalent: the Disclosure Scotland (enhanced) certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My teacher was New Zealand concert pianist Rosemary Mathers, who was taught by Janetta McStay at the University of Auckland. Other inspiring guides were Michael Cottam and Michael Houstoun.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Edinburgh Society of Musicians (ESM)
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My Grade 7 student Stefan McDermott was recently offered the music scholarships from both George Watson's College and George Herriot's School against fierce competition. Watson's was offering two scholarships, Heriot's only one.
My pupil Bridget Kelly gained her ATCL in piano performance last year.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Piano and Theory of Music, including training for Associated Board and Trinity practical and theory exams.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
BA, ATCL, LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) in piano performance. My theory qualification is the advanced Musical Knowledge paper that was a requirement of the diplomas.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 per hour (1 hour or half hour lessons).
- Where do you teach?
At home: Edinburgh, in Morningside; or sometimes at pupils' homes if they live nearby.
- When are you available?
I am mainly available during week day afternoons.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages from 7 upwards, all levels up to and including diploma.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall grade exams and diplomas.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe the best relaxed technique should be taught from the very first lesson, not left until later on. And the true focus is always musical expression. If you're thinking only of placing the notes in order and passing an exam, the process can be very frustrating. Focusing on musical aspects gives you not only results, but enjoyment!
