About Gabriel

My name is Gabriel, and I am a 17-year-old student at The Brooklyn Latin School with a deep, enduring passion for the Latin language. As a student currently immersed in Latin IB Higher Level, I have moved beyond the foundational grammar to tackle the intricacies of advanced translation and literary analysis. My dedication to the language has earned me Summa Cum Laude honors on both the National Latin Exam and the National Medusa Exam. Our coursework demands a rigorous engagement with original texts, and I routinely analyze the epic narrative of Virgil’s Aeneid, the mythological transformations in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the lyrical beauty of Horace’s Odes, and the intense emotional range of Catullus’ poems, among others. My journey with Latin is one of continuous discovery, and I have come to appreciate its logical structure alongside its profound connection to history, literature, and the modern world. This upcoming summer, I will be traveling to Rome to further study Latin in its historical heartland, a testament to my commitment and deep familiarity with the language. Because I navigate the exact same curriculum and understand the unique learning environment of our school, I can offer a highly supportive and relatable perspective as your tutor. I know firsthand what it takes to succeed in our classes, and I can help you build the solid foundation in grammar and syntax crucial for unlocking these advanced works. Whether you are currently in Latin I, II, III, or preparing for the rigor of the IB Diploma Program, I am here to help you build confidence, master your coursework, and achieve your goals. Let's explore the fascinating world of Latin together.

About the lesson

Salvete discipuli! My teaching approach is centered around clarity, engagement, and building a strong foundational understanding. I believe that Latin isn't just about memorization; it's about unlocking a logical system that, once grasped, can become incredibly rewarding. My techniques include: Breaking Down Complex Grammar: I'll dissect intricate grammatical concepts into manageable chunks, using clear explanations, visual aids (diagrams, charts), and real-world examples to illustrate how Latin works. Focus on Comprehension, Not Just Translation: While translation is important, my primary goal is to help you understand the Latin. We'll work on identifying grammatical structures, understanding word order, and grasping the nuances of meaning. Interactive Learning: Lessons won't be passive lectures. I encourage active participation through questioning, working through exercises together, and applying concepts in different contexts. Gradual Progression: We'll build your knowledge step-by-step, ensuring a solid understanding of each concept before moving on to more complex material. Tailored Approach: I recognize that everyone learns differently. I'll adapt my teaching style and pace to suit your individual needs, learning style, and specific areas of difficulty. Making Connections: I'll highlight the connections between Latin and English vocabulary, grammar, and even history and mythology, making the language feel more relevant and accessible. Utilizing Visual and Auditory Aids: Where appropriate, we'll use online resources, flashcards, and even explore the sounds of spoken Latin to enhance learning. Students seeking to improve their understanding of grammar: If you're struggling with verb conjugations, noun declensions, syntax, or any other grammatical concepts, I can help solidify your understanding. Students aiming to enhance their translation skills: We'll work on strategies for accurate and nuanced translation of Latin texts. Students preparing for quizzes, tests, and exams: I can help you review material, practice different question types, and develop effective study strategies. Students who want to deepen their appreciation for Latin literature and culture: We can explore excerpts from famous Latin authors and discuss their historical and cultural context. Relatability and Empathy: I've been in your shoes! I understand the moments of frustration and the triumphs of understanding. I can explain concepts in a way that resonates with a student's perspective. Fresh Perspective: Sometimes, hearing an explanation from a peer who has recently grasped a concept can make it click in a way that a teacher's explanation might not. Flexible Scheduling: As a fellow student, I can often offer more flexible scheduling options that fit around your busy school life and extracurricular activities. Affordable Support: My tutoring rates will be designed to be accessible for high school students.

Gabriel has been a great help in preparing me for the next level of Latin. She doesn't just focus on the current material but also gives me a good foundation for what to expect in the future. Her explanations of grammar are thorough, and she always makes sure I really understand the 'why' behind the rules.
