About Shashank

I am playing keyboard since I was 7 and Guitar since 2013 that is for 8 years so I was sure that I would make it.I dropped out of my B.tech pursuit in 3rd year after realising that my forte is music. Had a war with my family and after winning I chose music as my permanent career.

I worked in a music studio for 2-3 years after that. During that time I learned all about music production. I also happened to be in a rock band on Synth/Guitars and backing vocals.

I learned singing from a music institute while I was in a college. My interest grew in vocals so I left the band and went to Kashi, the city of learning, to learn Indian Classical Music from a well trained Guru. I learned Indian Classical Vocals in Kashi for 3 years. I have a senior diploma in Hindustani Classical Vocals.

I have my own youtube channel and I constantly upload stuff there. I am an artist and teaching has always been something that I enjoy. I have taught Guitar to many students when I was in my college. I have taught piano to 8 year old kids even. So I am well accustomed to teaching kids as well as adults.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Right now, I'm teaching Piano, Guitar and Indian Classical Vocals. Since my childhood I was gifted with the awareness of sound and without any training I could make out any Bollywood tune on my small musical keyboard.
During my college days I used to compose my own songs on the keyboard. But unfortunately then I didn't get any proper training because of lack of awareness and local teachers. When I noticed them teaching the acoustic guitar, I decided that I don't want to be taught by them because they looked like they were unhappy with what they were doing. But when I was making up my mind about not going to learn anything from any teacher then she came, my vocal guru, into my life. She used to be so happy while teaching as if she was totally enjoying it. Even I enjoyed her company and the teachings.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

To get proper training in Indian Classical Vocals, I went to Varanasi. There I came to know what a real Guru is like. You must have skills, and you must know how to transfer it to the student. I agree that I am teaching basically for monetary purpose right now but I am totally enjoying my work, introducing people to this field where they could be relaxed and practice focus and even meditation kind of states. The best part about teaching is that even I get to learn so much in order to teach them. I am growing and that is why I enjoy teaching. This is a field where you won't get stagnant.
  • How does your work help society?

My vocals teacher used to let me take the kids batch many times.
I loved teaching those kids and even the kids started liking me. I always used different methods to teach them certain aspects of music. Whatever works, I used that method. Taught them using examples and acts. And when I saw that the kids were learning and growing, it gave me a great joy that I was bringing some positive transformation in these kids. I think this is an innate interest in every human being. To help others and transform them into beautiful human beings. And teaching is the best method to do that.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

That would be Sadhguru. Because his teachings brought huge transformations in my life. I changed my course from engineering to music and invested my life into that. Right now I am earning a good amount from the work I enjoy. This is the best part. And the yogic sadhna helps me to remain balanced and detached from my mind and body. I always teach keeping him in mind. I invest my life on my students so that they can flower as not just musicians but better human beings as well.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I like to make tea, play badminton and FIFA on console, explore places and compose melodies. I also have a youtube and Instagram account so I like to posts stuff on that.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Well, there is a girl who is learning vocals from me online. She feels she can't really sing. She has a little understanding of the notes and I was thinking that I should tell her to learn something else. But the she was so reluctant. She said that she knows that she is nowhere near singing good but she wants to learn. She said that she is willing to give months or years for that. I asked - 'What if you don't get it even then?'. She replied that she just want to get better and keep learning because she likes music. I told her that it is okay if she is willing to learn as I will teach.

From the first lecture I told her about how listening is the best exercise to understand music or learn it. I told her to be aware of all the sounds. And, I gave her many tasks like that. I also asked her to buy a keyboard and learn it first before singing. She followed everything. It has been 2 months since then and I am amused by her growth. She has really improved. I realised that anyone can learn anything if they are really dedicated and willing.
