About Emily

Emily is a recent Cornell graduate who studied the yangqin in Hong Kong for over 12 years. She attained merit in the Central Music Conservatory's performance grade exam in 2021, and has won many awards at different music festivals, including gold in the senior division for the 73rd Hong Kong Music Festival and silver at the fifth Yangqin Arts Festival in 2024.

Additionally, she has participated in various music orchestras and ensembles, with which she has also won silver and gold medals for ensemble competitions.

About the lesson

The yangqin (揚琴) – otherwise known as the Chinese dulcimer – is a plucked-string instrument where in which the player uses two bamboo 'mallets' to hit the strings. If you were to imagine a piano, rather than using the keys to hit the piano strings, you are the keys hitting the dulcimer strings!

Lessons will focus on technique and skills, pieces, and historical background, and can be conducted in either English or Mandarin Chinese. Beginners and music lovers of all levels are welcome!

If you are interested in hearing what the yangqin sounds like, I personally recommend "古道行" (Journey on the Ancient Road) for a slow but rich piece that evokes imagery of the Silk Road, or "離騷" (Encountering Sorrow) for a fiercer piece that captures both the despair and determination of a poet and official having faced betrayal.
