I focus to make the students understand the basic concepts of programming. I make sure that the student knows the concept and helps them until they are very good in the subject. I would first explain the theory behind a particular concept/topic, as to what exactly is it we are learning, why does it exist and what is its use in the programming world. Then I would write a code example to demonstrate the concept we just learnt and map it to a real-world situation.
