About Mika

Hi! I’m Mika, a British-Japanese tutor whose first language was Japanese but grew up in London — so I’m fully bilingual, with native-level fluency in both Japanese and English. Having lived between both cultures, I really understand how different the two languages are, and I love helping people find fun, practical ways to connect with Japanese. I studied Biomedical Engineering at university here in the UK, and I also spent a few years working in engineering firms in Japan — which gave me a good sense of how Japanese is used in everyday life and in professional settings. Before that, I taught Maths and English to primary and secondary students in London, in both English and Japanese. That experience taught me how to adapt my teaching to different people, whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills. My lessons are relaxed, friendly, and focused on real-life conversation — not just what's in textbooks. I want you to feel comfortable speaking, making mistakes, and asking questions. Whether you're learning for travel, work, or just for fun, I’ll work with you to build your confidence and get you speaking naturally. Looking forward to helping you on your Japanese journey!

About the lesson

I offer friendly and practical Japanese conversation lessons designed to help you speak with confidence and ease. My approach focuses on how people actually speak in real life — not just what's in the textbooks. If you've ever felt that classroom Japanese doesn't quite match how it's spoken in the wild, you're not alone — and that's exactly what my lessons aim to bridge. Each session is tailored to your goals and interests. Want to practise ordering drinks at an izakaya? Chat naturally during a game night? We can meet in context and build real-world language skills through those scenarios. Lessons are usually one hour long, but I’m happy to arrange longer sessions if needed. They’re open to all levels — whether you’re starting from scratch or just looking to brush up your conversational skills. I previously taught Maths and English (in both English and Japanese) to primary and secondary students in London, so I’m used to working with learners of different ages and backgrounds. I’ve also lived and worked in Japan for several years, prior to returning to London and visit regularly, which adds cultural and practical depth to my teaching. Whether you're preparing for a trip, studying for the JLPT, or just want to feel more comfortable speaking Japanese, I’d love to help you get there — in a relaxed, supportive environment.

I cannot recommend Mika enough to a beginner looking to learn Japanese. I wanted to surprise my cousin's new husband by learning some basic Japanese before their first visit to the UK together. My cousin has been learning in Japan for some years so they were amazed to find I was learning too! Mika is very good at working with my style of learning, using cultural references like music and tv/film recommendations, or conversational tone and idioms to engage me in creative ways.
