About John
First and foremost I try to provide a welcoming environment, and calm constructive feedback throughout. I teach the violin as I learned: using a traditional approach which emphasises sound technique and sheet music reading skills from the outset. I use grades, scales, and etudes as a progressive framework to guide you through all stages of your musical development.
I am also open to incorporating appropriately challenging music of your choice into our lessons, which can range from standard classical repertoire to arrangements of popular music. I also love to teach transcription and arrangement, either as part of a course of violin lessons or as a standalone pursuit.
My main passion is ensemble playing. I have over 20 years of experience in ensembles ranging from simple duets to string quartets and full orchestras. Joining an ensemble is great for your playing and for connecting with new people, and I can't recommend it enough!

Lessons range from focused and structured to relaxed and fun-oriented, depending on your personal musical goals. I have plenty of experience guiding pupils of all ages, and can help you find an approach that suits your musical tastes and preferences.

• BA Music (first class) - University of York
• MA Music Composition (distinction) - University of York
• DipABRSM Violin Performance
• ABRSM Grade 8 Violin (distinction)
Experience: • 5 years teaching experience • 100% pass rate for pupils grades 1-8
Pricing: • £35 per hour • £20 per 30 minutes
