About Kurt

I've been working as a professional session drummer in Cape Town for over 22 years, performing and recording across jazz, African fusion, pop, rock, hip hop, and electronic music. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with artists including Freshlyground, PHFAT, Mac McKenzie & The Ghoema Captains, Nonku Phiri, and many others, as well as performing at major South African festivals and on television.

Alongside performing, I've taught drums, piano, and ensembles at several schools and music academies, including School of Rock, Camps Bay High School, Woodstock Music Academy, and the French International School. Teaching is something I genuinely enjoy, and I love helping students discover their own musical voice.

I also play piano, guitar, and bass, produce electronic music under my artist name Kumodi, and compose music for film and documentary projects. I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (Drums) at the University of Cape Town. I believe that continuing to learn makes me a better musician and, more importantly, a better teacher.

My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and structured. I adapt lessons to each student's goals, whether you're picking up the sticks for the first time, preparing for exams, or looking to improve your technique, groove, timing, improvisation, or musicality. While my lessons are relaxed and enjoyable, I also believe that consistent practice and commitment are the keys to real progress.

If you're enthusiastic about learning, I'd love to help you become the drummer you want to be.

Music is at its best when it's shared. This course gives beginner to intermediate musicians and singers the opportunity to experience what it's really like to be part of a band—from the first rehearsal to performing a live show at a Cape Town venue.

Throughout the course, you'll learn how to rehearse effectively with other musicians, communicate using practical music theory, read rhythm, and create simple song charts for rehearsals. We'll also cover rehearsal room and stage etiquette, professional soundchecks, and how to prepare a performance you can be proud of.

As a band, you'll work together to choose songs, build a setlist, and, where appropriate, learn how modern technology and electronics can enhance a live performance.

Most importantly, you'll gain the confidence that comes from making music with others, performing in front of an audience, and building lasting musical connections. By the end of the course, you'll have practical experience that prepares you for future bands, gigs, and collaborations.

The course fee includes rehearsal studio hire, professional band direction, and all rehearsal materials, including song charts where required.

Rehearsals are led in a supportive and structured environment, with a focus on developing confidence, musicianship, communication, and performance skills. The goal is to prepare each band for a live performance at a Cape Town venue.

For students who would like additional support, private lessons in drums (in-person only), guitar, and piano/keys are available at an additional cost to help accelerate progress between rehearsals.
