FAQ's
📚 How early should you start preparing for the 11 Plus exam?
Starting 11+ preparation at age 9 allows a steady, pressure-free approach rather than last-minute cramming.
- Year 3 (age 7-8): Focus on building confidence and core English and Maths skills without exam pressure.
- Year 4 (age 8-9): Introduce exam content, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning systematically.
- Year 5 (age 9-10): Polish skills and build stamina through regular mock tests and past papers.
Every child is different, so consider their confidence level and how competitive your target schools are.
💰 How much should I expect to pay for 11 Plus tutoring in Bath?
Private 11+ tutoring in Bath generally runs at about £23/h per session.
Prices vary depending on several factors:
- The tutor's experience and qualifications (teaching credentials, 11+ specialism, proven results)
- The competitiveness of your target grammar schools
- How lessons are conducted (one-to-one, small group, online, or in-person)
- How often and how long each session lasts
Many tutors offer package deals or sibling discounts, which can reduce the hourly rate over time.
🎯 What does my child need to know for the 11+?
Children sitting the 11 Plus are tested on English, Maths, and two types of reasoning skills.
- English: Reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sometimes creative writing.
- Mathematics: Arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra basics, geometry, and word problems.
- Verbal Reasoning: Measures how children manipulate words, spot patterns, and solve language-based puzzles.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Tests abstract thinking using diagrams, shapes, and visual patterns without words.
Understanding the specific test format helps focus preparation on the right question types.
