FAQ's
📚 How early should you start preparing for the 11 Plus exam?
Starting 11+ preparation at age 9 allows a steady, pressure-free approach rather than last-minute cramming.
- Year 3 (age 7-8): Focus on building confidence and core English and Maths skills without exam pressure.
- Year 4 (age 8-9): Begin targeted practice with exam-style questions while keeping sessions manageable.
- Year 5 (age 9-10): Effective for confident learners who need focused refinement.
A gradual two-year approach often produces better results than intensive short-term cramming.
💰 How much should I expect to pay for 11 Plus tutoring in Heywood?
Private 11+ tutoring in Heywood generally runs at about £24/h per session.
Prices vary depending on several factors:
- Your tutor's background and expertise (teaching credentials, 11+ specialism, proven results)
- How selective the schools you are aiming for
- Session format (individual tuition, group classes, face-to-face, or via video call)
- The number of hours booked per week
Booking a block of lessons often brings the per-session cost down significantly.
🎯 What does my child need to know for the 11+?
Children sitting the 11 Plus are tested on English, Maths, and two types of reasoning skills.
- English: Reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sometimes creative writing.
- Mathematics: Covers numerical operations, shape properties, data handling, and applied problem-solving.
- Verbal Reasoning: Assesses vocabulary breadth and logical thinking with words.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Measures problem-solving ability independent of language skills.
Exam formats vary by region. GL Assessment and CEM are the two main test providers, each with different question styles.
