FAQ's

đŸ”€ What are the basic Arabic letters called?

Arabic uses 28 characters, each representing a consonant sound and changing shape depending on its position.

  • The "non-connectors" include Alif, Dāl, Dhāl, Rā, Zāy, and Wāw, which keep their isolated form on the left side.
  • Letters change form depending on where they sit in a word: start, middle, end, or alone.
  • Alif, Wāw, and Yā double as long-vowel markers when needed.

Beginners often use vowel marks, but fluent readers usually skip them.

Learning the alphabet unlocks newspapers, signs, and classical literature alike.

💰 What does a private Arabic lesson cost in Manchester?

Arabic tuition in Manchester typically costs about ÂŁ16/h per hour.

Expect some variation depending on:

  • Your current ability (starting from scratch, conversational, or exam-level)
  • The tutor's qualifications and experience (native speaker, university degree, years of teaching)
  • Session duration and regularity (single sessions, weekly packages, intensive courses)
  • Lesson format (virtual lessons, in-person visits, or hybrid options)

Booking multiple sessions often unlocks a better price per lesson.

Several instructors let you try one lesson free, helping you decide if the fit is right.

⚡ What are the toughest hurdles in Arabic study?

Most learners find Arabic grammar and the writing system harder than vocabulary.

  • Unlike English, Arabic verbs follow predictable moulds—once you learn the patterns, conjugation becomes logical.
  • Reading direction and shape-shifting letters require practice, but they follow clear rules.
  • Certain throat and emphatic sounds feel unfamiliar, but listening practice helps.

Regular feedback from an experienced instructor turns these hurdles into manageable steps.

Learn to speak Arabic with the help of native speakers

Arabic lessons in Manchester: find a tutor

As the mother tongue of 287 million people and a second language of 246 million people worldwide, Arabic is currently the fourth most-used language on the planet.

Standard Arabic is an abjad native to the Arabian Peninsula, dating back to the 2nd century BCE. As such, it is a Semitic language with very old roots that has gradually spread all over the world. Today, Arabic is an official language in many countries of the Arab and Muslim world.

Whether you’re learning Arabic from a native speaker or one from our experienced teachers, studying in Manchester offers so many benefits on cultural, cognitive and professional levels.

By taking Arabic language courses with Superprof in the Manchester area, you can learn new methods and improve your Arabic in all areas, such as:

  • Learning Arabic dialects (e.g. Moroccan, Egyptian, Tunisian, etc.)
  • Learning modern standard literary Arabic
  • Learning the Arabic alphabet, grammar and vocabulary
  • Reading and writing from right to left
  • Learning Koranic Arabic (to read the Koran or take Tajwid classes)
  • Understanding and pronouncing the letters of the alphabet
  • Learning more about Arabic language and culture
  • Preparing for a visit to an Arabic country

There you have it: some great reasons to start learning Arabic with us in Manchester!

Arabic: an influential Semitic language

The Arabic language suffers from many prejudices linked to a tense political and religious context (racism, terrorism and radical Islamism). As a result, many students shun Arabic lessons in favour of German, Chinese or Japanese.

Arabic is and has always been an influential language. It’s the official language in twenty-six states – the 22 countries of the Arab League, Eritrea, Chad, Israel, the Western Sahara – and in several international organisations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the United Nations, the African Union and the Arab Maghreb Union.

What’s more, the geographical area that uses the Arabic alphabet is enormous: from west to east, it covers all the countries from Morocco to China!

But what’s up with this unfamiliar alphabet which reads from right to left?

Well, in the Arabic language, each letter of the alphabet goes back to Aramaic civilisation, a descendant of the Phoenician Empire, which gave birth to the Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.

Historians and archaeologists date the first text in Arabic to 512 CE, which was found in present-day Syria. But the people who would have used a first form of Arabic would be the Nabataeans, a population settled in Petra (Jordan) in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE.

After the Hegira in 622 and the revelations of the Holy Koran by the Prophet Muhammad (570-632), Arabic started crossing borders.

In the Middle Ages, Arabic became the language of the sciences (geography, medicine, mathematics, physics) and of literature (Arabic literature, poetry, philosophy, etc.). Arab thinkers were making such scientific discoveries that the West would soon take inspiration from these Arabic advances into the Renaissance.

Nowadays, knowing how to speak Arabic is a significant asset. Nearly 300 million people have Arabic as their mother tongue, and this can open up many professional opportunities to advance your career (such as teaching, finance, communication, international trade, etc.).

Why Study Arabic in Manchester?

Taking Arabic classes in the Manchester area will significantly increase your language level. You’ll learn to read literary Arabic at beginner or intermediate level, or even (why not?!) become bilingual in this international language.

But why learn Arabic rather than Spanish or French in Manchester?

15.8% of Manchester’s inhabitants are Muslim according to figures from the World Population Review (2019) – a figure that testifies to a large pool of potential Arabic teachers!

The legacies of the Arabic language on our society are immeasurable and multisecular. Arabic civilization has enriched the fields of the sciences and modern arts, so to understand Arabic will be a gateway to a mine of knowledge and culture.

In a sense, learning Arabic actually helps us to understand our own language more profoundly. The Arab and Muslim presence in Europe (particularly France) lasted several centuries, and nearly a thousand years in Spain.

In fact, many Arabic words have penetrated Latin ones. There are actually loads of European words which come directly from Arabic, for example:

  • Apricot
  • Algebra
  • Almanac
  • Coffee
  • Cumin
  • Elixir
  • Fakir
  • Giraffe
  • Guitar
  • Mummy
  • Neck
  • Orange
  • Quintal
  • Syrup
  • Volcano

Arabic, Persian and Maghreb authors have left an indelible and timeless trace in literature, leaving the opportunity for any Arabic speaker to discover many words and idiomatic expressions amidst their works.

And we can’t go without mentioning the fact that Arabic is also the language of Islam. Is your mother or father Syrian, Iraqi or North African? Did you receive an Islamic education? Are you looking to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the Koran?

Taking classes with Superprof in Manchester will bring you quality language and religious training through Koran verse study if you wish.

That said, it’s never too late to learn a new language, and our tutors are equipped to teach to any age, at any level!

But Manchester is a huge metropolis: regardless of which area you live in, be it the city centre or the outskirts of town, the only dilemma is to choose the right teacher for your lifestyle and learning style.

Choose the right Arabic teacher in Manchester

Having grown hugely since 2013, the Superprof platform now offers dozens of Arabic language teachers in the UK’s sixth largest city.

The average price of a one-hour lesson is ÂŁ15. This is a pretty reasonable rate when you consider that you could be paying up to ÂŁ45 an hour with some tutoring services!

Generally, it’s the hourly rate which is the first thing to consider when choosing a teacher.

Arabic language teachers in Manchester offer a range of prices, from about ÂŁ8 per hour (children's courses) to ÂŁ30.

But depending on the teacher’s profiles, other factors come into play:

  • The tutor’s experience and qualifications, which institute they graduated from
  • The tutor’s language level: native Arabic speaking or not, bilingual or not
  • The type of Arabic taught: literary Arabic, an Arabic dialect, Koranic Arabic
  • Your level of education: beginner, intermediate, advanced, primary school, secondary school, A-level, university
  • The course format: individual course, group course, small group, etc.
  • The content of the courses offered: conversation classes to help with oral expression, reading comprehension, grammar lessons, learning vocabulary
  • The geographical area: if you live near Manchester city centre, it won’t be very helpful having a tutor that lives out near Warrington…

Language training works most successfully when a relationship of trust can be built between you and your teacher, so it’s essential to get along well and feel supported.

Some tutors offer the first hour of tutoring for free, and this can be beneficial for everyone. The teacher is able to identify the student’s level and decide whether their tutoring would be appropriate, and then build a personalised, adapted and effective learning plan.

The learner, on the other hand, can get an idea of whether the Arabic teacher is to their taste and able to deliver the learning they require.

The last thing to consider is what kind of teacher you want. It might be that you want someone quite laidback and relaxed, or maybe someone a bit more rigorous who can push you to your limits.

If, in the end, home tutoring sessions with one of our teachers doesn’t suit you or your lifestyle, you can opt for a distance learning course via webcam.

There are hundreds of Superprof tutors connected and available to provide Arabic video lessons all over the UK, and the world!
