Chess coaches often suggest 40% middlegame work, 40% endgame practice, and just 20% opening preparation.

• The middlegame (40%) focuses on tactics, piece coordination, and attack planning.
• The endgame (40%) teaches you how to convert advantages and avoid draws.
• Opening study should focus on principles rather than long move sequences.

This balance helps because most games are decided in the middlegame or endgame, not the opening.

A private chess lesson in Dundee usually runs £17/h on average.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• Student level (beginner, intermediate, advanced, or tournament player)
• Coach qualifications such as FIDE titles or coaching certifications
• Lesson length and frequency (single sessions vs. weekly packages)
• The teaching format: video call, face-to-face, or group class

Some instructors provide a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style before committing.

Chess teachers summarize opening play with three C's: Control (center), Castle (king), Connect (rooks).

• Control the center means placing pawns and pieces on or toward e4, d4, e5, d5.
• Castling tucks your king behind pawns and activates your rook in one move.
• Connected rooks support each other and can double on open files later in the game.

Following these three steps gives you a safe, active position with good piece coordination.

Students in Dundee rate their chess instructors 5⭐ out of 5, a sign of quality teaching.
