Mandarin has four main tones, and when two third tones appear in a row, the first one shifts to a second tone.

Here is how it works:

• Take 你好: written nǐ hǎo, but spoken as ní hǎo because of this rule.
• Other common words follow the same pattern: 很好 (hěn hǎo) becomes "hén hǎo".
• Mastering this rule helps your Mandarin sound more fluent and less robotic.

A third tone dips low then rises slightly, but when followed by another third tone, the first one simply rises.
