Chinese tones interact, and the 3-3 rule means the first of two third tones is pronounced as a rising tone instead.

The rule applies like this:

• When you say "hello" in Chinese, 你好 shifts from 3-3 to 2-3 automatically.
• This also affects 小姐 (xiǎojiě), which sounds like "xiáojiě" in conversation.
• Mastering this rule helps your Mandarin sound more fluent and less robotic.

The reason: two dipping tones in sequence are awkward to pronounce, so the language naturally adjusts.

In Skipton, private Chinese tutoring runs about £20/h per session.

What affects the cost:

• Beginner, intermediate, or advanced courses each have different pricing
• Whether the tutor is a native Mandarin speaker with formal credentials
• How lessons are delivered, such as video calls, home visits, or classroom settings
• Session duration and how often you meet, with packages typically reducing the hourly rate

Online lessons often cost less and remove travel time, making them a flexible option.

The foundation of Chinese numeracy is mastering these ten basic numerals and their tones.

Each number, character, and pronunciation:

• 1-3: 一 yī, 二 èr, 三 sān
• 4-6: 四 sì, 五 wǔ, 六 liù
• Seven is 七 (qī), eight is 八 (bā), nine is 九 (jiǔ), ten is 十 (shí)

Tones matter here: mixing up sì (four) and shí (ten) changes meaning entirely.

Flashcards pairing characters with audio help reinforce both recognition and pronunciation.

Students in Skipton rate their Chinese tutors 5⭐ out of 5, highlighting the quality of lessons available.
