In spoken Chinese, consecutive third tones trigger a rule called tone sandhi: the first third tone rises like a second tone.

This is the pattern:

• When you say "hello" in Chinese, 你好 shifts from 3-3 to 2-3 automatically.
• Other common words follow the same pattern: 很好 (hěn hǎo) becomes "hén hǎo".
• Ignoring tone sandhi makes speech choppy, which is why practising this early matters.

This phonetic shortcut makes Mandarin flow better and is essential for sounding natural.

Prices differ depending on:

Many tutors offer the first lesson free, so you can test their teaching style before committing.

Learning to count in Mandarin starts with ten simple characters, each paired with a pinyin pronunciation.

The complete list from one to ten:

• 1-3: 一 yī, 二 èr, 三 sān
• 四 (sì) = 4, 五 (wǔ) = 5, 六 (liù) = 6
• 7-10: 七 qī, 八 bā, 九 jiǔ, 十 shí

Once you know 1-10, larger numbers follow a logical pattern: 11 is 十一 (shí yī), 20 is 二十 (èr shí).

Practise saying these aloud daily until the tones become automatic.
