Scholars call these seven recognised recitations the qira'at, each linked to the Prophet Muhammad through a chain of teachers.

• The scholar Ibn Mujahid formalised these seven readings in the 10th century, and three more were later added to make ten.
• The riwayat are the narrations of each reading, like Warsh and Qalun from Nafi'.
• Hafs 'an 'Asim is the most widely recited narration today and the one most UK learners begin with.
• The differences involve vowelling, elongation (madd) and some word forms, without contradicting the meaning.

A private tutor will help you perfect Hafs first, then explore other readings if you wish to go further.

Quran tutors in Glasgow typically charge £9/h.

The cost depends on:

• Your level and what you want to achieve
• The tutor's experience and qualifications, such as an ijazah
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The lesson format (online, at home or at the tutor's)

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining effective.

Most beginners follow a clear path, from the Arabic alphabet to full recitation with Tajweed.

• Letters and sounds come first, including throat letters such as ع and ح that English does not have.
• Vowel marks let you read words accurately, even before you understand their meaning.
• Basic Tajweed covers makharij (points of articulation) and rules like madd, or lengthening.
• Short surahs from Juz 'Amma, like Al-Fatiha and Al-Ikhlas, are ideal first passages.

With a private Quran tutor, children and adults progress at their own pace, online or at home.
