Learn English with an ESOL tutor in Cheddar

The 70/30 rule is a teaching principle where students speak 70% of the time and listen 30%.

Why this matters for language learning:

• Active practice builds fluency: verbal practice strengthens neural pathways for spontaneous speech
• Mistakes become learning moments: your tutor corrects errors as you speak, so feedback is immediate
• Confidence grows through use: the more you talk, the more natural English feels

Standard lessons usually reverse this ratio, with instructors dominating. Private ESOL tutoring lets you flip that balance and maximise your speaking time.

A good ESOL tutor creates activities that keep you talking: role-plays, discussions, and real-life scenarios.

The average price of ESOL tutoring in Cheddar is around £15/h.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• Your current English level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• The tutor's qualifications and experience (years of experience, specialist training)
• How often you study (weekly sessions, intensive courses)
• Lesson type (video call, in-person, or hybrid)

Many tutors offer discounted packages if you book multiple sessions upfront. Online ESOL lessons can also be more affordable while offering the same quality. It is standard practice to have an introductory lesson before you decide.

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. It describes courses designed for adults whose first language is not English.

Private ESOL lessons work on four essential language areas:

• Reading comprehension: decoding texts for daily life, work, and study
• Written expression: composing clear sentences, emails, and forms
• Listening: understanding native speakers in various accents
• Oral fluency: expressing ideas confidently in everyday situations

Unlike general English courses, ESOL focuses on practical integration into UK life, work, and education.
