The subjunctive mood tends to challenge students more than any other tense. It expresses doubt, emotion, necessity, or hypothetical situations rather than facts.

• Trigger phrases — Words such as "pour que", "avant que", and "à moins que" signal its use.
• Irregular stems — High-frequency verbs have unique subjunctive forms you must memorise.
• Practice tip — Memorise complete phrases before analysing the grammar.

Regular practice with real sentences helps this tense feel less intimidating over time.

You can expect to pay about £25/h for an hour of French tuition in Harpenden.

This rate can change several factors:

• The student's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• Your teacher's background and credentials (native speaker, degree, teaching certificates)
• How often you book and session duration (weekly, intensive, or occasional)
• How tuition is delivered (online, at home, or at the tutor's location)

Many tutors offer discounted rates when you book multiple sessions in advance. A trial session lets you experience their teaching style at no cost.

In practice, learning the most frequent words first gives you the biggest return.

This concept helps learners prioritise high-impact material over exhaustive memorisation.

• Core vocabulary — Mastering 2,000 high-frequency words lets you understand most conversations.
• Grammar priorities — Focus on the tenses you will actually use before studying rare literary forms.
• Real-world exposure — Conversations naturally repeat high-frequency words and patterns.

By applying this rule, you reach conversational ability faster without drowning in obscure details.
