Having been tutored myself in my A-levels I have a feel for what works and engages tutees. I like to start off by either giving a mini test to the student to identify weak areas- or if that seems a bit daunting, I would just have a chat with the student about what they would like to focus on. I always end the lesson with a few questions to really make sure we have covered the topic at hand.
My teaching method is very simple. At first I will give a test to my students to identify their strengths and weakness and then we'll take them each at a time to work on it and improve. I aim not just to explain a new lesson but also to help the student to find their own way of proving a theorem or a new idea. I always intend to make the lesson interesting and funny.
I have a very laid back way of teaching and have had many successes with students I have worked with, my most recent student went from not achieving a grade on the higher mathematics paper to obtaining a solid grade 6 over 9 months.
