Find a music reading teacher near me in Basingstoke

All Western music builds on 12 notes arranged in a pattern called the chromatic scale.

• Seven natural notes (A through G) create the white keys and serve as reference points.
• Five accidentals fill the gaps: each can be named as a sharp (♯) or flat (♭) depending on context.
• Sharps raise a note by one semitone, while flats lower it by the same amount.

Understanding these 12 pitches unlocks every scale, chord and melody in Western music.

Quick tip: memorise C-D-E-F-G-A-B first, then add the five sharps/flats in between.

Prices differ based on a few key criteria:

• Your current ability, from complete beginner to Grade 8 and beyond
• The tutor's qualifications and experience, including conservatoire training or teaching certifications
• The duration and regularity of your lessons
• The format — online lessons, in-person at your home, or at the tutor's studio

Opting for online tuition can reduce travel-related fees while maintaining quality.

A number of tutors include a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style.

The staff is your roadmap: notes placed higher sound higher, and notes placed lower sound lower.

• A treble clef tells you the second line from the bottom represents the note G.
• Bass clef indicates the fourth line up is F — helpful for left-hand piano and bass instruments.
• Note shapes tell you how long to hold each sound: a filled oval is shorter than an open one.
• Bass lines follow G-B-D-F-A and spaces spell A-C-E-G.

Practise reading a few notes at a time, then gradually add rhythm and dynamics.
