Every melody and chord you hear comes from just 12 different notes.

• Seven natural notes (A through G) create the white keys and serve as reference points.
• Five accidentals fill the gaps: each can be named as a sharp (♯) or flat (♭) depending on context.
• A semitone is the smallest step in Western music — the distance from one key to the very next.

After G♯/A♭, the pattern restarts at A, one octave higher or lower.

Start with the white keys, then learn where the black keys slot in — that's your complete toolkit.

Reading music starts with understanding the staff — five horizontal lines that represent pitch.

• A treble clef tells you the second line from the bottom represents the note G.
• Bass clef indicates the fourth line up is F — helpful for left-hand piano and bass instruments.
• A semibreve (whole note) lasts four beats, a minim (half note) lasts two, and a crotchet (quarter note) lasts one.
• Lines and spaces each represent a specific pitch, which you can memorise with mnemonics.

Consistent short sessions beat occasional long ones — aim for 10–15 minutes daily.
