Every melody and chord you hear comes from just 12 different notes.

• The natural notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G — seven letters that form the white keys on a piano.
• Five accidentals fill the gaps: each can be named as a sharp (♯) or flat (♭) depending on context.
• Sharps raise a note by one semitone, while flats lower it by the same amount.

This 12-note cycle repeats identically whether you move up toward higher pitches or down toward lower ones.

Quick tip: memorise C-D-E-F-G-A-B first, then add the five sharps/flats in between.

Music theory and reading lessons in Henley average £20/h per session.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• Your current ability, from complete beginner to Grade 8 and beyond
• The tutor's qualifications and experience, including conservatoire training or teaching certifications
• How often you meet and for how long each time
• The format — online lessons, in-person at your home, or at the tutor's studio

Some teachers provide block-booking discounts that lower the per-lesson cost.

A number of tutors include a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style.

Begin by learning how the staff visually organises pitch from low to high.

• The treble clef (𝄞) marks higher-pitched notes and sits at the start of the top staff.
• Bass clef indicates the fourth line up is F — helpful for left-hand piano and bass instruments.
• Note shapes tell you how long to hold each sound: a filled oval is shorter than an open one.
• Treble lines spell E-G-B-D-F ("Every Good Boy Deserves Fun") while spaces spell F-A-C-E.

Practise reading a few notes at a time, then gradually add rhythm and dynamics.
