Every melody and chord you hear comes from just 12 different notes.

• The natural notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G — seven letters that form the white keys on a piano.
• The black keys on a piano represent these five in-between pitches with two possible names each.
• Sharps raise a note by one semitone, while flats lower it by the same amount.

After G♯/A♭, the pattern restarts at A, one octave higher or lower.

Start with the white keys, then learn where the black keys slot in — that's your complete toolkit.

Music theory and reading lessons in Pulborough average £30/h per session.

This rate can vary depending on several factors:

• Whether you need foundational basics or advanced sight-reading skills
• The tutor's qualifications and experience, including conservatoire training or teaching certifications
• Lesson length and frequency — weekly hour-long sessions versus shorter fortnightly meetings
• Whether you choose face-to-face tuition, video calls, or a hybrid approach

Many tutors offer discounted packages if you book multiple lessons upfront.

Many offer a no-obligation introductory session to ensure a good fit.

Begin by learning how the staff visually organises pitch from low to high.

• The treble clef (𝄞) marks higher-pitched notes and sits at the start of the top staff.
• Lower instruments like cello, bass guitar and trombone read primarily in bass clef.
• Note shapes tell you how long to hold each sound: a filled oval is shorter than an open one.
• Lines and spaces each represent a specific pitch, which you can memorise with mnemonics.

Consistent short sessions beat occasional long ones — aim for 10–15 minutes daily.

Learners in Pulborough rate their music theory and reading tutors 5⭐ on average.
