Music notation captures 12 unique pitches that span the entire audible range.

• These seven "letter" notes appear on every instrument and anchor the musical alphabet.
• Five accidentals fill the gaps: each can be named as a sharp (♯) or flat (♭) depending on context.
• Moving up or down by one semitone means shifting to the nearest available pitch.

This 12-note cycle repeats identically whether you move up toward higher pitches or down toward lower ones.

Quick tip: memorise C-D-E-F-G-A-B first, then add the five sharps/flats in between.

A one-hour music reading lesson in Horsham usually runs around £25/h.

What you pay depends on aspects such as:

• Your current ability, from complete beginner to Grade 8 and beyond
• The instructor's credentials, ABRSM affiliations, or professional performance experience
• How often you meet and for how long each time
• The format — online lessons, in-person at your home, or at the tutor's studio

Many tutors offer discounted packages if you book multiple lessons upfront.

Ask about a free first lesson to see if the tutor's approach suits your learning style.

The staff is your roadmap: notes placed higher sound higher, and notes placed lower sound lower.

• Most melodies, vocals and right-hand piano parts use the treble clef.
• Bass clef indicates the fourth line up is F — helpful for left-hand piano and bass instruments.
• Rhythm comes from recognising these shapes and counting their durations.
• Treble lines spell E-G-B-D-F ("Every Good Boy Deserves Fun") while spaces spell F-A-C-E.

Practise reading a few notes at a time, then gradually add rhythm and dynamics.
