Understanding rugby starts with mastering its basic laws and structure.

• The forward pass rule: passes must go behind or level with the passer. Mastering this is the first lesson for any newcomer.
• The tackle and ruck: a tackled player must release the ball, and a ruck forms when teammates contest possession over it. Knowing how to react is vital.
• Scoring options: points come from tries, conversions, penalty kicks and drop goals. Recognising when to attempt each one is part of the strategy.
• Set pieces: set pieces like scrums and lineouts are organised contests for possession that every team practises regularly.

Understanding these foundations makes the rest of the sport far more approachable, especially with personalised guidance from a private rugby tutor.

A private rugby lesson in Kintbury costs approximately £25/h.

Several factors influence the price:

• Player level: your current level (beginner, club player, advanced) shapes the type of session needed.
• Coach experience: the instructor's credentials and track record on the pitch are reflected in their hourly fee.
• Session structure: the number of hours booked in advance often unlocks a better rate.
• Lesson format: the format (one-to-one on a pitch, online video analysis, or small group) makes a real difference to pricing.

Many rugby tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple sessions in advance.

Learning rugby effectively requires a structured method that builds skill, fitness and tactical awareness.

• Master the core skills: focus on technical fundamentals first, because clean execution wins more games than raw athleticism.
• Build rugby-specific fitness: a mix of strength, sprint speed and aerobic endurance prepares your body for the demands of 80 minutes.
• Study positional play and tactics: learning the game's structure, from set pieces to phase play, turns physical effort into effective rugby.
• Get expert feedback: personalised coaching turns generic training into focused improvement that translates directly to match day.

Consistency and good coaching remain the keys to lasting progress on the pitch.
