The fundamentals of rugby revolve around several key rules that shape every match.

• The forward pass rule: passes must go behind or level with the passer. Mastering this is the first lesson for any newcomer.
• The tackle and ruck: after a tackle, the ball-carrier releases the ball and players bind together to win it back. This is the heart of rugby's contact phase.
• Scoring options: a try is worth 5 points, a conversion adds 2, while penalty kicks and drop goals each give 3. Each option fits a different match situation.
• Set pieces: scrums and lineouts restart play after stoppages and create structured chances to win the ball. Both demand teamwork and timing.

These rules unlock everything that comes next, from positional play to attacking patterns. Working with an experienced coach helps you apply them on the pitch.

Rugby coaches in Charlton Kings typically charge £25/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Player level: the standard you play at, from grassroots to academy level, affects the focus of each lesson.
• Coach experience: the tutor's experience and qualifications, including RFU coaching badges, influence the rate.
• Session structure: the duration and frequency of lessons affect the overall cost, with regular blocks often cheaper per hour.
• Lesson format: the format (one-to-one on a pitch, online video analysis, or small group) makes a real difference to pricing.

Many rugby tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple sessions in advance.

Getting better at rugby comes down to consistent practice across a few key areas.

• Master the core skills: focus on technical fundamentals first, because clean execution wins more games than raw athleticism.
• Build rugby-specific fitness: conditioning sessions should match the stop-start nature of rugby, blending high-intensity efforts with recovery.
• Study positional play and tactics: each position has specific roles, and understanding yours helps you make smarter decisions in real time.
• Get expert feedback: a qualified coach spots habits you cannot see yourself and gives targeted drills to fix them. Regular sessions accelerate progress.

A private rugby tutor can speed up this process significantly by tailoring sessions to your strengths and weaknesses.
