Understanding rugby starts with mastering its basic laws and structure.

• The forward pass rule: the ball can only travel sideways or backwards between teammates, never forwards. This shapes every attacking move.
• The tackle and ruck: after a tackle, the ball-carrier releases the ball and players bind together to win it back. This is the heart of rugby's contact phase.
• Scoring options: a try is worth 5 points, a conversion adds 2, while penalty kicks and drop goals each give 3. Each option fits a different match situation.
• Set pieces: set pieces like scrums and lineouts are organised contests for possession that every team practises regularly.

With these basics down, more advanced tactics and skills become much easier to pick up.

A private rugby lesson in Leominster costs approximately £20/h.

The cost depends on a few things:

• Player level: the standard you play at, from grassroots to academy level, affects the focus of each lesson.
• Coach experience: the tutor's experience and qualifications, including RFU coaching badges, influence the rate.
• Session structure: the number of hours booked in advance often unlocks a better rate.
• Lesson format: the teaching mode, from in-person field sessions to remote tactical reviews, impacts what you pay.

Comparing several profiles helps you find the best value for your goals and budget.

Learning rugby effectively requires a structured method that builds skill, fitness and tactical awareness.

• Master the core skills: passing, catching, tackling and kicking are the foundations every player needs. Repetition under pressure makes them automatic.
• Build rugby-specific fitness: conditioning sessions should match the stop-start nature of rugby, blending high-intensity efforts with recovery.
• Study positional play and tactics: each position has specific roles, and understanding yours helps you make smarter decisions in real time.
• Get expert feedback: personalised coaching turns generic training into focused improvement that translates directly to match day.

With regular practice and the right guidance, you'll see noticeable progress within a few weeks.
