The 7-letter rule is a core Russian spelling principle: after г, к, х, ж, ш, щ, and ч, you must write и instead of ы.

Grammatical endings follow this rule strictly.

• The plural of книга is книги, since г requires и.
• Adjectives: тихий (quiet) ends in -ий, not -ый, because х precedes the ending.
• Even when и sounds like ы (after ж, ш, щ, ч), you still write и.

Learning this rule early helps you avoid common spelling mistakes in Russian.

The average price of a Russian lesson in Brighton is around £18/h.

The final cost depends on:

• Difficulty level: introductory Cyrillic or business Russian change the rate.
• The tutor's experience and qualifications, such as native speakers or certified teachers.
• How often you meet: regular weekly lessons or intensive blocks affect cost per hour.
• Lesson format: online lessons, home visits, or meeting at the tutor's place.

You can often negotiate a lower price by committing to a term of regular sessions.

The Russian alphabet contains 33 Cyrillic letters: 21 consonants, 10 vowels, and 2 special signs.

Understanding the categories helps memorisation:

• 21 consonant letters include familiar shapes like в and н, plus distinctly Russian ones like ж and щ.
• 10 vowels: а, у, о, ы, э (hard vowels) and я, ю, ё, и, е (soft vowels). Each hard vowel has a soft counterpart.
• Special markers (2): ь softens the preceding consonant, while ъ separates consonants from soft vowels.

Some letters look identical to Latin ones but sound different: Р is "r", С is "s", Н is "n".
