A violin has four strings tuned to the notes G, D, A and E, from lowest to highest.

• G string: The lowest and thickest string, producing a rich, warm tone.
• D string: This string bridges the bass and treble registers.
• A string: This is often the first string beginners learn to play on.
• E string: It requires precise finger placement because small errors become very audible.

The interval between each pair of strings is a perfect fifth.

Knowing the open strings is essential before learning any scales or pieces.

The average price of a violin lesson in Oxford is around £29/h.

This rate can change depending on several factors:

• The student's level (Grade 1–8 or diploma level)
• The tutor's background and credentials (professional orchestra experience, ABRSM exams)
• Session duration and how often you meet (weekly, fortnightly or intensive blocks)
• How lessons are delivered (in-person at home, at the teacher's studio, or online)

Online lessons can sometimes reduce costs while offering flexible scheduling.

Yes, the violin is widely considered one of the most challenging instruments for beginners.

• Fretless fingerboard: You rely on muscle memory and ear training rather than visual markers.
• Bowing technique: Beginners often create scratchy or squeaky noises before they develop smooth bow control.
• Posture and hold: A teacher can spot and fix bad habits before they become ingrained.

With regular practice, most students play simple pieces within a few months.
