About Julian

I have a degree in music from Cambridge University, a PGCE in Secondary Music teaching and played viola professionally for five years, two in Sicily and three with the RLPO (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra). I taught violin for two years in South East London primary schools and have taught viola and violin privately for many years now.
After leaving the RLPO, I moved to Edinburgh and worked for many years in IT in a variety of roles (e.g. Systems Manager, Business Analyst). During the whole of this time I played principal viola in the Scottish Sinfonia, a leading amateur orchestra in Edinburgh.
I very much enjoy teaching and finding ways to encourage people to express themselves through music.

About the lesson

A viola/violin lesson should be fun, challenging and inspiring. I aim for a flexible approach geared to the age and level of whoever I'm teaching and encourage pupils to develop their ability to sight-read music, to play from memory and to really want to play the music they're studying. I also stress the importance of building efficient left and right arm technique as this is the only way to obtain lasting satisfaction from playing.
I offer 40 minute lessons for younger, beginner players and 1 hour lessons for more advanced players. I'm also happy to offer 50 minute lessons.

Having had viola lessons with Julian for a number of years, I would thoroughly recommend him. His enthusiasm, insight and patience were invaluable working with me as an older returnee to viola playing.

I know Julian from many years playing together in the Scottish Sinfonia. He was a fantastic leader of the violas. We were a large section (16 plus players) and he was always calm, reliable and professional. In sectional rehearsals he guided us through the most challenging orchestral repertoire with great expertise, insightful advice and excellent musicality. An outstanding tutor!
