No math, no CAD, no building codes. I want us focused on how design feels and works using everyday spaces as examples. I’m hoping to chat and provide understanding on topics related to architectural design, design theory, design principles and how shapes, colors and spaces work together.
Course Length: 10 Chapters (or more with shorter sessions).
All lessons end with a practice activity!
Chapter 1: Really, What Is Design? (1 - 1.5 hours, 1 - 2 lessons)
- Let's notice design instead of just living in it.
Chapter 2: Shape & Form. (1 - 2 hours)
- Basic geometry of objects and rooms and how it shapes feeling.
Chapter 3: Design Principles. (2+ hours, 3 - 4 lessons)
- What is balance?
- How do designers guide your eyes?
Chapter 4: Space & Scale. (1 - 1.5 hours, 2 - 3 lessons)
- How size and proportion affect space.
Chapter 5: Lighting. (1 - 1.5 hours, 2 lessons)
- Understanding light as a feeling, then treating it as a design tool.
- Natural and artificial lighting.
Chapter 6: Color Theory. (1 - 1.5 hours)
- Color as a mood and communication tool, not a technical wheel to memorize.
Chapter 7: Design Principles. (1.5 - 2 hours)
- Universal rules that apply to design.
Chapter 8: Materials & Texture. (1 hour)
- How different surfaces influence space and feeling.
Chapter 9: Design a Space! (2+ hours, 2 lessons)
- Applying what we have learned in a small project.
Chapter 10: Presenting Your Design. (2+ hours)
- Creating and completing a concept for one small architectural project.
- Explaining design decisions, not just making them.
