About Magalie
My academic background includes a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sussex and a Master from the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, one of France’s leading universities. On a personal note, I am a mum of two teenagers and I have been tutoring for many years. Currently, I also work as a marketing manager for a biotech lab. I have many hobbies, I enjoy long walks with my dogs and I can play the flute!

I offer face-to-face A-Level Chemistry tuition in the Newmarket area, Suffolk, for students studying the OCR A, Salters' or AQA exam boards.
Lessons can take place at a suitable public location, such as a local library, or I can travel to you. If you would prefer lessons at home, please note that a travel fee will apply in addition to my hourly tuition rate. The travel fee will depend on your location.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your requirements, please feel free to get in touch.
My lessons are structured, focused and tailored to your exam board and specification. I mainly use past paper questions that are specific to your exam board so that you can practice the types of questions you are most likely to face in your exams. I also make sure that every point in your specification is covered so that there are no gaps in your knowledge.
We will usually focus on one topic at a time. I find this much more effective than jumping between different topics, as doing a little bit of everything can sometimes give you a false sense of security. You may feel confident because you can answer familiar questions, but that does not necessarily mean that you have identified all the gaps in your understanding. By focusing on one topic at a time, we can explore it thoroughly and make sure that you understand it properly before moving on.
For each topic, I provide you with a comprehensive pack of past paper questions from 2017 to 2025. We will work through as many as possible during the lesson. Anything we do not have time to complete will be set as homework and we will go through it together in the following lesson. This allows us to identify mistakes, address areas of difficulty and make sure that you are making progress.
I will also give you detailed notes on how to approach common exam questions and how to structure your answers so that you can gain as many marks as possible. Understanding the chemistry is only part of doing well at A-Level. You also need to know what the examiner is looking for and where marks can easily be lost.
Once you are comfortable with your exam board material, I may introduce carefully selected questions from other exam boards. There is considerable overlap between A-Level Chemistry specifications, so these questions can provide an additional challenge and expose you to less familiar ways of testing the same knowledge. I use them when they are relevant and when I feel they will stretch your understanding further.
After each lesson, I will give you a detailed plan that explains what we have covered, what you need to work on and what your next steps are. This means that you will always know exactly what you should be focusing on between lessons.
As your exams get closer, we will move towards a broader revision approach. We will revisit the specification from the beginning and use a wide range of questions to make sure that your knowledge is secure across all topics. I will also organise revision around Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 so that you can practise the different demands of each paper and become comfortable applying your knowledge under exam conditions.
My aim is to make every lesson purposeful. I want you to know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are, identify and close any gaps in your knowledge and develop the confidence to tackle unfamiliar questions independently.
