About Mark
I am proud to hold a PhD in music from Durham University! As a child, I learnt cello and piano to Grade 8 level and well beyond. At university age, I left music for a decade and worked in an office... but music called me back and in 2012, I changed career and have been a musician ever since: teaching private instrument/composition tuition, teaching at Durham University as a part-time lecturer (performance, composition, orchestration), and working as a freelance cellist/pianist and composer. My musical influences growing up were incredibly varied, which allows me as a teacher to easily incorporate students' interests into their tuition.

Having taught many students aged from 6 to 66 at levels from complete beginner to diploma level, I pride myself on working with each student to make the tuition personal to them. I have worked hard to understand the challenges of 'getting started', especially for younger students. And my experience teaching performance and composition at degree level means that I am just as comfortable teaching the professional skills required of high level performers and composers, as I am getting the youngest beginners having fun with music!
