Mary - Coulsdon - French

Methodology

I am multilingual. My aim is to pass on my enthusiasm and increase the confidence of the learner. The best lesson is the one that makes you forget the time and leaves you with a sense of achievement.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Modern Greek & French.
I use a variety of methods of teaching to match the ability, needs and interests of the learners. I am also happy to prepare a visit to study Ancient Greek Art or French painters if interested.
I can also teach French and Greek cooking using YouTube videos in the original language.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Greek Baccalaureate
GCSE English Language
Degree in History & Languages
PGCE in Modern and Community Languages

- How much do you charge?

Reduction in fees for more than one session per week or more than one student.

Modern Greek/ French 1 student : 1 hour £35

- Where do you teach?

At our family home in Coulsdon, Surrey. My students come from Reigate, Redhill, Banstead, Carshalton Beaches, Sutton etc.

- When are you available?

I teach any day of the week between 10:00 and 20:00 hours.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities of adults and children (starting from 11)

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for GCSE and A-Level examinations.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Don't miss out on learning a new language or improving in one that you have already started learning. It will be enjoyable and much fun.
A foreign language is enriching and makes our lives more interesting. And if you decide to visit the country itself you could end up bringing back not only
cute souvenirs, unforgettable memories, great recipes but also, a few good friends.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

Teaching in Secondary School Education (up to A-Level) London, Jewish Free School
Teaching in Greek Community Schools Crystal Palace and Bromley
Voluntary teaching in a Greek Primary School, St Cyprian, Croydon
Many years of private tuition

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I did my teacher training (PGCE) in Thames Polytechnic and during this time I taught in a variety of secondary schools for boys, girls or mixed, comprehensive
and faith schools. I also observed Primary School Teaching and taught voluntarily in St Cyprian Greek Primary School for 3 months.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I choose 2 of my students: Learner A is a 14 year old that I have been teaching since his early years in primary school. He hopes to sit his GCSE exam in a couple of years. He is not that keen on doing homework but keeps it up because he doesn't get bored and learns enough in the lessons. We learned some tricky grammar that went down well as we talked about his dog he adored and, drew and discussed his family tree. I took a year's break to study in Germany. He already had a tutor but I was happy and of course flattered he decided to resume his lessons with me.
Learner B is a retired lady who enjoys learning and believes in keeping both body and mind regularly exercised. We study the songs her teacher uses in teaching her dance group she goes to, read books in the original e.g. Victoria Hislop's "The Last Dance and Other Stories", comics on theTrojan War, the exploits of Hercules and Theseus and now Theodora. I prepare activities to help her in her reading and increase her grasp of grammar and syntax. She has a keen interest in etymology. She is amazed to find out how many words she knew in English happen to be Greek and her vocabulary keeps increasing. We also use our course book when it is called for. We have both been enjoying our lessons and time we spend together for many years.
