Master's Graduate Offering Mixing, Composing and Arranging Advice at Home In and Around Edinburgh

Methodology

The way I teach is to work with student's ongoing projects, offering immediate feedback and offering useful mixing, composition and arranging advice. Alternatively, the lesson can revolve around creating new projects from scratch, or going through the fundamentals step-by-step. Given my diverse education, I aim to offer flexibility in my approach to tuition.

I am willing to provide lessons to any level of study, though for Master's students and above it may be more useful to focus on feedback and discussions about work rather than the fundamentals.

Work can be done on my computer using Studio One, Pro Tools, and Sibelius. Logic Pro X can also be used through my laptop. I use Kontakt Komplete as well as CineSamples Strings. Additional software will have to be ran from the student's computer. I can also provide access to two hardware synthesisers if required.

Background

I am a composer and sound engineer based in Edinburgh, having recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh studying Composition for Screen MSc. I taught for a time at York College, though I am just starting out offering private lessons. Additionally, I worked as a studio assistant in a Leicester-based studio, and a sound engineer for an Edinburgh-based film company.

Nick's CV

2012/13 - York College – teaching assistant
Assisting the teaching for the Music Technology course. Responsibilities included overseeing studio time, giving feedback to ongoing projects, and running the studio beyond normal hours.

2013 – University of Huddersfield – BA Music Technology with Popular Music - First
This 4-year degree consisted of learning of high-level music theory, learning how to compose contemporary music using musical 'games'/constructs, a dedicated module on recording technique, and the opportunity to compose, record and mix a 30-minute concept album. Also included in the course was a placement year.

2015 – The Honey Label Studio, Leicester – Studio assistant
My role in working in the Honey Label studio was to set-up microphones, headphones, monitors and the desk, to welcome and tend to the clients, and to provide mixing advice to the engineer. Such advice consisted of demonstrating more efficient methods of working, providing new mixing techniques, and ensuring the file system was up-to-date for a modern working studio.

2017/18 – The University of Edinburgh – MSc Composition for Screen – 2:1
This further education gave me insights into how to compose for various media, such as films, games, and TV. An intensive 1-year course, I studied under Yati Durant, who taught a range of skills from composition technique to orchestration to mixing, as well as how to link the music with the media. My final project consisted of a 20-minute composition which was constructed out of found sounds such as bins being struck, metal caddy being bowed, cellophane rustling, amongst many others. It honed my technique as being a composer who thinks outside of the box.

2017/ongoing – Every Sole Productions – Sound engineer
For Every Sole, my task is to record performances from musicians from around the world, in a time-limited setting. The acts can range from solo performers to entire bands, which requires me to be flexible with my set-up as well as knowledgeable about microphone configurations, plus the ability to work well with clients. The final task is to mix the tracks, which can be wildly variable giving the different genres of musicians we work with. Again, this means I need to have knowledge of a wide range of genres in order to be flexible and efficient.

The instruments I play include double bass, acoustic guitar, mandolin, piano, banjo, and bouzouki. These all go into the composition I write, and may be useful for students to have access to during lessons.

Jamie

I've known nick for quite a few years now meeting him just before he started university, he's friendly and welcoming.

As a musician he's talented and hard working yet at the same time remains relaxed and easy going. He might be too humble to big himself up but i'll say it for him.

If you're looking at a few different tutors ... pick Nick.

Nick has studied music for a number of years and I've collaborated with him before on various compositions.
