I believe the first thing any student needs to think about when learning a new language is; what are my goals and objectives, what kind of things do I want/need to express in my new language? Once a student reaches a level of basic competency, they should be given the opportunity to learn what they need to know in order to achieve their own personal goals and objectives. In my experience, if the learning material is not relevant, interesting or practical, students tend to lose interest.
Each lesson I teach will include vocabulary building directly related to the topic of the lesson. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss together in order to complete tasks, to review each other's work and to discuss the possible meaning of words, phrases, idioms and so on with follow up from the teacher. Where possible, previously learned vocabulary, phrases and expressions will be incorporated into subsequent lessons. Because language learning is a cumulative process, it is important for students to be able to incorporate something learned in lesson five into something they want to express in lesson twenty-five for example.
