About Matthew
I am an Honors Mathematics student at McGill University, currently one semester away from graduating. My main areas of specialization are real analysis, measure theory, and probability theory. I tutor students from middle school through to university-level calculus (Calculus I–III), and I adapt my approach depending on the student’s goals, background, and preferred style of learning.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my strong theoretical background combined with a flexible teaching style. Because of my training in analysis and proof-based mathematics, I am comfortable explaining the deeper ideas behind the material rather than relying only on memorized procedures. At the same time, I understand that many students primarily need practical problem-solving skills for exams and assignments, and I tailor lessons accordingly.
For students who are especially interested in mathematics itself, I can also approach topics from a more rigorous and theoretical perspective similar to what would be done in an introductory analysis course. This can be particularly useful for students preparing for honors mathematics, theoretical physics, or other proof-based university courses.

My teaching philosophy is that mathematics is learned primarily by actively solving problems. In most cases, lessons are centered around working through exercises together while developing the underlying theory as needed. I focus on helping students understand not only how to solve a problem, but why the methods work, so that they can apply the same ideas independently in new situations.
A typical lesson usually begins by identifying the topics or assignments the student is currently working on. We then review any conceptual difficulties before moving into guided problem solving. I generally demonstrate one or two representative examples, then work collaboratively with the student on increasingly challenging problems while emphasizing intuition, structure, and clear mathematical reasoning. I also encourage students to explain their thought process aloud, since this is often the best way to identify and correct misunderstandings.
