About Cameron

I am a 2nd year student at the University of Surrey studying for my MMath degree. Since secondary school, my classmates and friends have often asked me for help, most notably at GCSE and A level and mainly across the core scientific subjects of physics, chemistry, biology and maths which I feel most comfortable with. I initially was very happy and yet confused as to how people would struggle with questions and yet so quickly comprehend them after only a small amount of assistance. However I have realised that it is so often the most minute oversight or unclear concept that needs to be corrected for people to understand a problem. Since coming to university I have reflected on how much I enjoy helping others make these small breakthroughs which allow big steps to be taken in improving grades and confidence and most importantly allowing a genuine understanding of what they are doing. My friends still ask for my occasional help to this day, ranging from the lengthy task of writing answers to degree level maths papers to helping their younger siblings with homework, and I am always looking forward to the next time I can be of help!

I have been through GCSEs and A-levels and hence am most familiar with these qualifications.

I believe that a simple and clear explanation of the basic concepts is the most effective way to learn.
I believe that practising these concepts through both straightforward and unusual examples helps people to both remember the concepts and know how to apply them.
I do NOT believe that doing hundreds of the same type of question does anything more than bore people and that it is far more important to fully understand a single question than to attempt many.
I believe that understanding helps memory, as you need only learn what you need to figure out the rest for yourself.

Typically, I will go over the concepts a student wishes to learn. This will be followed by questions of increasing complexity to make them think about how what they have learned applies. This will likely then be followed by some short piece of homework to test understanding and to improve memory. I will grade this and give feedback, followed by either more work if they wish or a shift to another concept. I will also advise 'mini tests' such as questions taken from past papers to recap a large number of concepts at once to identify progress and weak points.

All of the above will of course be specifically tailored to individual needs and ability. Everyone learns at different rate, in different ways, and with different goals. My goal is not to help students achieve 9's, A*'s or the like, but to help them reach the full potential that they are capable of, whether that be passing their maths GCSE, meeting university offers, or simply having the satisfaction of understanding and, possibly, enjoying maths more so than they do now.
I honestly believe that all concepts, at least in maths, have an intuitive explanation. From explaining multiplication of fractions using slices of cakes, to deriving the value of pi using only regular polygons (and quite possibly an actual pie), I believe that seemingly distance concepts can be brought much closer to reality.
