About Matthew

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a professional trumpet player. I have been working freelance in London for the last 8 years and have recently relocated to Glasgow, Scotland. Whilst in London I had the opportunity to play as part of numerous combinations of small Jazz bands as a leader and a sideman including performances at Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Vortex, Bulls Head Barnes and Queen's Tennis Club. I have also performed on several occasions as a deputy for the 2nd trumpet chair in the west end production of Wicked and have performed at West End Live in Trafalgar Square representing the Elgar Room Jazz sessions at The Albert Hall.

I am the creator and director of a Jazz Ballet company called, The Forgotten Fairground for which I compose and perform in. I have also had the opportunity to work as a sideman with The Jonathan Silk Big Band, The Mike Fletcher Big Band and The Young Pilgrims Brass Ensemble as well as leading many of my own bands too.

As well as my performing work I am very active as an educator and have worked with The Notebenders community big band, Kingston Grammar Jazz Orchestra and Wimbledon High School Junior Trumpet Ensemble. I have worked as a brass tutor, teaching one to one lessons and whole class teaching for Merton Music Foundation and Wandsworth Music Service. I have also run several Jazz Kids workshops for Jazzlines at Town Hall Symphony Hall in Birmingham. These have taken place at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Mostly Jazz Festival as well as Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I worked at Kingston Grammar School and Wimbledon High School last year for which I had CRB/DBS checks done. As a visiting music tutor at these schools I have also received child protection training.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Whilst growing up I studied with Pat Crowther (English National Ballet) and Andy Bush (Radiohead, Chaka Khan).

Prior to music college I studied in New York City with Scott Wendholt (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) and Marvin Stamm (Frank Sinatra, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis)

I studied on the Jazz course at Birmingham Conservatoire and graduated with BMus Honours in Jazz Performance.

I'm keen to hear from anybody interested in learning trumpet or Jazz & improvisation. These can be one off lessons or regular weekly lessons. I will try to be as flexible as possible so please get in touch to discuss possible lessons & availability.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Trumpet students of all ages and abilities (beginners to advanced players) in a range of musical styles including Classical, Jazz and Pop repertoire. I also teach improvisation to other instrumentalists who are at least grade 4/5 standard.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I studied on the Jazz course at the Birmingham Conservatoire (2007-2011) and graduated with BMus Honours in Jazz Performance.

- How much do you charge?

For beginners to intermediate players I prefer to teach 45min lessons however some people are suited better to 30min lessons initially as the trumpet can be a very physically demanding instrument. For more advanced players, Jazz and improvisation lessons I would suggest an hour.

Lesson Prices:
30 mins - £25
45 mins - £30
60 mins - £35

- Where do you teach?

I am based on the Southside of Glasgow, near Queen's Park in Battlefield. I am happy to travel to houses in this area and surrounding areas but please get in touch for any enquiries based in Glasgow.

- When are you available?

I am available on weekday mornings and evenings as well as the weekend. I am also happy to teach during school holidays. Please get in touch to discuss your availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Typically I teach students from the age of 7 up to adults, from beginner to advanced. I have taught students as young as 5.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I have coached students through Associated Board grade exams.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I love teaching music and I am always keen to meet new students and hear what you are interested in playing. I have some great music for all abilities and I will also always endeavour to create music for you that you enjoy playing whether it's your favourite TV theme tune or a current or old pop song. I look forward to hearing from you.
