About Karen
- What kind of experience do you have?

Over 25 years experience as performer, entertainer and in the recording industry.
10 years teaching experience - all ages and genres with emphasis on technique, breathing, vocal placement and confidence building.
5 years conducting and music lead experience, working with large groups, and coordinating massed concerts.
I combine teaching/coaching with a career as a professional mezzo.
- Sung for many companies including the Royal Opera House and as a soloist under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle.
- One half of acclaimed opera duo, the OperaBabes and have performed Worldwide with leading orchestras, with Placido Domingo, have released 3 albums and several TV documentary’s.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I hold 3 certificates.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I have been privileged to train with some fantastic singers/artists. I started training under Mezzo Jean Allister at Leeds, and then Theresa Goble at the Guildhall School of Music. I studied for several years with Janice Chapman and in recent years with Mezzo, Gillian Knight.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians Union.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a large range of students of differing abilities/talents. I have a man in his 60s who came to me a year ago claiming he was tone deaf - indeed he couldn't pitch a note. After much work and pitching practice he is now able to sing a large range of songs and has come every week without fail. Another student, a Russian girl in her 30s has been coming twice a week and we are now working towards auditions for the Royal Acadamy in London which I am thrilled about. I have a young girl who I've been coaching in the lead role of Hairspray at her secondary school and is destined for big things ... and currently I'm working with an eight year old who can sing Queen of the Night's aria to the envy of some sopranos ... I enjoy each pupil, whatever level, as there is always some new information to impart and some new achievement in each lesson.

Teaching across all genres is with a holistic approach, good vocal technique, breathing, vocal placement and expansion of range and tone. Following that, performance technique and confidence building.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical singing, Opera, Musical Theatre, Popular Music and work with children and adults of most ages towards auditions, exams and competitions or just for fun.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
BA Honours Degree in Music/English - The University of Leeds
Post Graduate Vocal Diploma in Singing Studies - The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 for an hour and £25 for a half hour.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in St Ives, Cambridgeshire
- When are you available?
Week days.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Currently I have pupils as young as 6 and teach up to whatever age! I am as comfortable teaching an absolute beginner as an advanced student, both are welcome.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
At the moment, musical theatre exams and music college applications.

No one has requested this yet, but I would be happy to look at it.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I think the most important thing with singing is to be relaxed and enjoy the experience - when you are worried or tense you cannot sing to the best of your abilities. In my lessons I try to understand each student and their hopes and personal goals so that you can relax and enjoy singing, but also that you learn something new each time you come for a lesson. I work hard at building the self confidence of my pupils and helping them find the opportunities to reach their full potential. I am happy to answer any questions you have.
